day one of rollerskating

katie & i went and skated tonight at the "adult skate" at a local skating rink. i had no idea. i had no idea. i had no idea!

there is a rollerskating underground society. i swear! there were like over 100 people there, of every race, age, and clique type you could imagine. wanna-be vanilla ices skated by matrix-inspired people who shared the rink happily with urban hipsters and men wearing camo pants and sunglasses. the music was weird synthesizer stuff that sounded like it was from the soundtrack of a straight-to-beta dance movie of the mid 80s. not only that, there were dozens of synchronized skating groups there. seriously, there were like 15 men in polo shirts and crew cuts and khakis that rode around the rink together and spun around and did hand movements together. there were kids that were breakdancing with their skates on in the middle of the ring. there was also some 80's flashback group of at least 25 people clad in fluorescent colored spandex shorts that were sort of like some sort of performance art thing. (some of them wore t-shirts announcing their role in heralding back the 80's or something like that)

anyway, we got a lot of practice in for our roller derby aspirations. i am going to be SO SORE. after all, most of the time my exercise consists of knitting or wrestling dogs off of my knitting. we're going to keep up the practice! (and enjoy 2 dollar hot pretzels for dinner. woo!)

You're a brave, brave woman! I would so fear for my tailbone if I ever got on skates again!! It sounds like you had a blast, and that your sore muscles will have been well worth it. You rock.

I love skating! I used to go every monday night to this rink in pompano that had an adult night. a couple of dollars to get in and free beer and wine. No kidding, the place was packed and the skating super fast. You had to have a few beers to have enough nerve to go out there.

That does it! I'm coming back! Forget the job hunting here in PR... think I'll go to school instead of working.

hmmmm, just thinking...

Aw man! My local rink (Rainbo) shut down about 10 years ago and is now CONDOS.

Sounds like fun! Maybe your derby team will have a bout with the Windy City Rollers someday!
